SECULAR PHILOSOPHY
(Non-Scholastic, Non-Thomistic):
- The Encyclopedia of Philosophy, 8 volumes in four tomes, 1967. Of universal use in the English speaking world, this encyclopedia remains to this day the best and most comprehensive English-language reference source for non-scholastic philosophy (search title in amazon.com for more details). Hardback, $25 (set).
- Dagobert Runes, Dictionary of Philosophy: Ancient-Medieval-Modern. Excellent resource for beginners in modern philosophy who feel lost amidst all the vocabulary and terminology. Paperback, in delicate condition, $1.
- Schick and Vaughn, Doing Philosophy: An Introduction through Thought Experiments. Very good, as far as secular, introductory textbooks go. Gives a good introductory presentation of contemporary English-language philosophy and its problems. Hardback, illustrated, $7.
- Teays, Second Thoughts: Critical Thinking for a Divisive Society. Applied Logic/critical thinking/media literacy (search title in amazon.com for more details). Paperback, $4.
- White, Discovering Philosophy. Second edition (search title in amazon.com for more details). Standard introductory textbook, with interesting chapters on philosophy of science and the personhood of dolphins. Paperback, $4.
- James Rachels, The Elements of Moral Philosophy. A famous utilitarian, Rachels argues that an act is right if and only if it has the best possible consequences. Rachels is one of the foremost contemporary representatives of this theory, which is at odds with the natural law and with Catholic morality, and which is rampant in our age. Essential reading for aspiring philosophers and ethicists. Rachels also offers some good arguments against relativism, subjectivism, egoism, and other false theories (search title in amazon.com for more details). Paperback, good condition. $2.
- James Rachels, The Right Thing to Do. Anthology of primary sources to accompany The Elements of Moral Philosophy (search title in amazon.com for more details). Paperback, good condition. $2.
- Peter Singer. Rethinking Life and Death: The Collapse of Our Traditional Ethics. The most diabolical book ever written on bioethics, this volume argues that life is not intrinsically valuable and that it is permissible to kill certain human beings whose quality of life is low if doing so maximizes the happiness of those with a higher quality of life. Singer is not only in favor of abortion and euthanasia on demand, but also in favor of infanticide (killing children who were born with defects). And, of course, he is an animal rights activist. To his credit, Singer is remarkably coherent. I recommend it for commited pro-lifers, so they can see the arguments (fallacies) of the other side (search title in amazon.com for more details). Paperback, good condition. $2.
- Shaw, Barry. Moral Issues in Business. (Search title in amazon.com for more details.) Paperback, $4.

Covers not only the theoretical moral principles, but also its pastoral and spiritual applications. $140.
- Stephen D. Benin, The Footprints of God: Divine Accommodation in Jewish and Christian Thought. A study of the concept of "accomodation" (synkatabasis, consdescensio)--God stooping down to our level, so that he may raise us up to his--in the history of biblical interpretation. Written by a Jewish theologian--and this is obvious from the text--the book is well versed in Patristics. One learns much in disagreeing with Benin. Required reading in one of Scott Hahn's classes.
