Quis mortálium, nisi divíno tutus oráculo, de vera Dei et hóminis Genitríce quidquam módicum, sive grande præsúmat incircumcísis, immo pollútis lábiis nomináre, quam Pater ante sæcula Deus perpétuam prædestinávit in Vírginem, digníssimam Fílius elégit in Matrem, Spíritus Sanctus omnis grátiæ domicílium præparávit?  Quibus verbis ego homúnculus sensus altíssimos virgínei Cordis, sanctíssimo ore prolátos, éfferam, quibus non súfficit lingua ómnium Angelórum?  Dóminus enim ait : Bonus homo de bono thesáuro cordis profert bona ; quod verbum potest étiam esse thesáurus.  Quis inter puros hómines mélior homo potest excogitári, quam illa, quæ méruit éffici Mater Dei, quæ novem ménsibus in corde et in útero suo ipsum Deum hospitáta est?  Quis thesáurus mélior, quam ipse divínus amor quo fornáceum cor Vírginis ardens erat?
What man, unless secure in a divine oracle, may presume to speak with impure, indeed with polluted lips, anything little or great about the true Parent of God and of man, whom the Father before all ages predestined a perpetual Virgin, whom the Son chose as his most worthy Mother, whom the Holy Ghost prepared as the dwelling place of every grace?  With what words shall I, a lowly man, give expression to the highest sentiments of the virginal Heart uttered by the holiest mouth, for which the tongues of all the Angels do not suffice?  For the Lord saith : A good man bringeth forth good things from the good treasure of his heart ; and this word can also be a treasure.  Among pure mortals who can be conceived of as better than she who was worthy to be the Mother of God, who for nine months had as a guest in her heart and in her womb God himself?  What better treasure than the divine love itself, which was burning in the Heart of the Virgin as in a furnace?
V.  Tu autem, Dómine, miserére nobis.

V.  But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.

De hoc ígitur Corde quasi de fornáce divíni ardóris Virgo beáta prótulit verba bona, id est, verba ardentíssimæ caritátis.  Sicut enim a vase summo et óptimo vino pleno, non potest exíre nisi óptimum vinum ; aut sicut a fornáce summi ardóris non egréditur nisi incéndium fervens ; sic quippe a Christi Matre exíre non pótuit verbum, nisi summi summéque divíni amóris atque ardóris.  Sapiéntis quoque dóminæ et matrónæ est pauca verba, sólida tamen atque sententiósa habére ; proínde septem vícibus quasi septem verba tantum miræ senténtiæ et virtútis a Christi benedictíssima Matre legúntur dicta, ut mystice ostendátur ipsam fuísse plenam grátia septifórmi.  Cum Angelo bis tantúmmodo est locúta.  Cum Elísabeth bis étiam.  Cum Fílio étiam bis, semel in templo, secúndo in núptiis.  Cum minístris semel.  Et in his ómnibus semper valde parum locúta est ; excépto quod in laude Dei et gratiárum actióne se ámplius dilatávit, scílicet, quum ait : Magníficat ánima mea Dóminum.  Ubi non cum hómine, sed cum Deo locúta fuit.  Hæc septem verba secúndum septem amóris procéssus et actus sub miro gradu et órdine sunt proláta ; quasi sint septem flammæ fornácei Cordis ejus.
And so, from this Heart as from a furnace of divine ardour the blessed Virgin brought forth good works, that is, words of the most ardent charity.  For as from a vessel full of the richest and best wine only good wine can be poured ; or as from a furnace of intense heat only a burning fire is emítted ; so indeed from the Mother of Christ no word can go forth except of the greatest and most intense divine love and ardour.  It is also the mark of a wise woman and matron to speak few words, but words  that are effective and full of meaning ; and so seven times, as it were, seven words of such wonderful meaning and virtue are read as having been uttered  by the most blessed Mother of Christ, that mystically it may be shewn she was full of the sevenfold grace.  To the Angel twice only did she speak ; to Elizabeth also twice ; with her Son likewise twice, once in the temple, and a second time at the marriage feast ; and once to the attendants.  And on all those occasions she always said very little ; with this one exception that she spake at length in the praise of God and in thanksgiving, namely, when she said : My soul doth magnify the Lord.  But here she did not speak with man, but with God.  Those seven words were spoken in a wonderful degree and order according to the seven courses and acts of love ; as if they were seven flames from the furnace of her Heart.

The liturgical worship, through which due honour is given to the Immaculate Heart of the Virgin Mary, and for which many holy men and women have prepared the way, the Apostolic See itself first approved in the beginning of the nineteenth century, when Pope Pius VII instituted the feast of the Most Pure Heart of the Virgin Mary, to be piously and reverently celebrated by all the dioceses and religious families who had asked for it.  Afterwards Pope Pius IX added an Office and a proper Mass to it.  But an ardent desire and longing, which had arisen in the seventeenth century, grew day by day, that namely, the same Feast, given greater solemnity, might be spread to the entire Church.  In 1942, Pope Pius XII, graciously acceding to this wish, and during the terrible war then ravaging almost the entire world, pitying the infinite hardships of men, and because of his devotion and confidence in our heavenly Mother, in solemn supplication earnestly entrusted the entire human race to her most generous Heart, and in honour of the same Immaculate Heart he ordered a Feast to be kept forever with its proper Office and Mass.

IN illo témpore: Postquam impléti sunt dies purgatiónis Maríæ, secúndum legem Móysi, tulérunt Jesum in Jerúsalem, ut sísterent eum Dómino, sicut scriptum est in lege Dómini: Quia omne masculínum adapériens vulvam sanctum Dómino vocábitur. Et ut darent hóstiam, secúndum quod dictum est in lege Dómini, par túrturum aut duos pullos columbárum. Et ecce homo erat in Jerúsalem cui nomen Símeon, et homo iste justus et timorátus, exspéctans consolatiónem Israël, et Spiritus Sanctus erat in eo. Well is he called just, who looked not for favour for himself but for consolation for his people.  He desired to be set free from the bondage of this frail body, but he waited to see the Promised One ; for he knew that blest are the eyes that see him.  Then took he him up in his arms, and blest God, and said : Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word.  Behold a just man, confined in the weary prison of the body, desiring to depart, and to begin to be with Christ. For it is far better to depart and be with Christ.

Whosoever will depart and be with Christ, let him come into the temple.  Yea, let him come, as to Jerusalem, and wait for the Lord's Christ.  Let him take hold on the Word of God, let him embrace the same with good works, as it were with arms of faith.  Then let him depart in peace, for he who hath seen Life, shall not see death.  Behold how the Lord's birth doth overflow with abounding grace for all, and prophecy was not denied except to the unbelieving.  Behold, Simeon prophesieth that the Lord Jesus Christ is come for the fall and rising of many.  Yea, he shall separate the just from the unjust by their deserts.  And according as our work shall be, so shall the true and righteous Judge command us to be punished or rewarded.

From of old time continual prayers have been offered to this Apostolic See not only by Bishops, Churchmen, and the Regular Orders, but also by Emperors and Kings, beseeching that the sinlessness of the Conception of the Mother of God might be made the subject of a Dogmatic Definition.  These prayers have been still more urgently addressed in recent times to our Predecessor, of happy memory, Gregory XVI, and to ourselves, by the Bishops, by the Secular Clergy, by the Regular Orders, and by the most eminent Christian Princes and nations.  The knowledge of these things hath caused our heart to rejoice, and they have been the serious occupation of our thoughts ever since, in spite of our unworthiness, the inscrutable Providence of God was pleased to set us in this supreme Chair of Peter, and to put his Church into our hands, for us to govern.  Since then, we have had nothing so much at heart as to yield to the desires of the Church in this matter, to the increasing of the veneration of which the most holy Virgin is already the object, and to the setting in a clearer light the singular graces with which God hath adorned her, being ourselves especially drawn to the same by the reverence, love, and affection with which we have been from our childhood animated towards the same most holy Virgin Mary, Mother of God.

It is known to all men, with what care this doctrine of the sinlessness of the conception of the Mother of God hath been handed down, set forth, and defended by the most distinguished Religious Orders, Theologians, Universities, and Doctors skilled in the things of God.  All men know likewise how carefully Christian Bishops, even in their public teaching, have professed the doctrine that through the merits of Christ our Lord and Saviour, foreknown by God, the Holy Virgin Mary, Mother of God, was delivered from ever being the victim of original sin, but, on the contrary, had the fruits of redemption applied to her at the very moment of her Conception, and was therefore redeemed in a nobler way than other.  But the weightiest fact of all is that the most holy Council of Trent, when, in accordance with the Holy Scriptures, as interpreted by the holy Fathers and the approved Councils, it decreed that all men are conceived in sin, expressly added that it did not mean thereby to say that the blessed and stainless Mary, Mother of God, did not form an exception to the rule.  From this declaration of the Fathers of Trent it can clearly be drawn that there is nothing in the Bible, nothing in tradition, and nothing in the Fathers which can rightly be adduced against this prerogative of the most Blessed Virgin ; nay, as far as circumstances demanded, they as much as declared her free from the original stain.

All Commentators on the Book of Genesis remark that passage where God at the very time of the Fall speaketh of the Atonement, to the confusion of the lying serpent, and the comfortable hope of man, and saith : I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed, and all the ancients teach that by this passage is meant the most merciful Saviour of mankind, namely, our Lord Jesus Christ, the Only-Begotten Son of God and his most blessed Mother the Virgin Mary, as if the enmity which both he and she felt against the devil was, in a sense, of a kind common to them both.  Christ took our nature upon him, and is become the Mediator between God and man, blotting out the handwriting that was against us, nailing it to his Cross, and the most Holy Virgin, by that subtle, close, and abiding tie which bindeth mother to Child, feeleth along with him his truceless enmity to the serpent, and he, though his merits, hath granted to her that moment of victory wherein her stainless foot bruised the serpent's head.

The language used in public worship is the necessary offspring of the teaching which it expresseth, and the former can have no safety unless the latter be settled.  Wherefore Our Predecessors the Roman Pontiffs, while encouraging the pious love of the faithful for the Conception of the Blessed Virgin, have taken care ceaselessly to inculcate the sinlessness of the same.  They have always particularly insisted that the Feast should be observed not in honour of Mary's sanctification, a false opinion, most foreign to the mind of the Church, but in honour of her Conception itself.

The same Our Predecessors have likewise resisted the dreams of those who have imagined that in the sinless Conception there were Two Instants, and that the Church celebrateth the Second and not the First.  Indeed, Our said Predecessors have considered the sinlessness of the First Instant to be as much a truth for their assertion, protection, and promulgation, as the sinlessness of the Conception at all.  Hence came those words in which Our Predecessor Alexander VII in a decree declareth the mind of the Church, and saith, Christ's faithful people, drawn by love to his most blessed Mother, the Virgin Mary, have of a long time believed that God, at the very First Instant in which he made her soul and joined it to her body, by a special grave and privilege  granted to her, through the merits of his dear Son, Christ Jesus, the Saviour of the world, whose precious death he foreknew, cleansed her from all sin, original as well as actual ; and it is in this belief, and no other, that the said faithful of Christ have always kept with devotion and joy the Feast of the said Conception.

Atque illud in primis solémne quoque fuit iísdem decessóribus nostris, doctrínam de immaculáta Dei Matris Conceptióne sartam tectámque omni cura, stúdio et contentióne tuéri.  Etenim non solum nullátenus passi sunt, ipsam doctrínam quovis modo a quópiam notári atque tradúci, verum étiam longe ultérius progréssi, perspícuis declaratiónibus iteratísque vícibus edixérunt : Doctrínam qua immaculátam Vírginis Conceptiónem profitémur, esse, suóque mérito habéri cum ecclesiástico cultu plane cónsonam, eámque véterem ac prope universálem, et ejúsmodi, quam Romána Ecclésia sibi fovéndam tuendámque suscéperit, atque omníno dignam, quæ in sacra ipsa liturgía solemnioribúsque précibus usurparétur.  Neque his conténti, ut ipsa de immaculáto Vírginis Concéptu doctrína invioláta persísteret, opiniónem huic doctrínæ advérsam, sive públice, sive privátim, deféndi posse severíssime prohibuére, eámque multíplici véluti vúlnere conféctam esse voluérunt.
It hath always been one of the weighty cares of Our said Predecessors the Roman Pontiffs to protect the doctrine of the sinlessness of Mary's Conception from any sort of attack or corruption.  Not only have they suffered no one to condemn and traduce it, but they have gone much further, and in public and repeated declarations have averred : That that doctrine which holdeth that the Virgin was conceived without sin is a doctrine, the arguments in support of which are strong enough to enable the profession thereof to be made at the time of public worship, which is antient, which is almost universal, which is one of those which the Church of Rome encourageth and protecteth, and which is worthy even to be expressed in the Holy Liturgy itself, and in the most solemn prayers of the Church.  Our said Predecessors did not stop even here, but in order to preserve the doctrine of the Virgin's sinless Conception from any injury, they strictly forbade that the opposite opinion should be maintained either in public or in private, to the end that it might at length die out under their disapprobation.
